My students are 6th graders in an urban, upstate NY middle school. We are in a high need community and 95% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. As many as 120 students flow through my class on a daily basis and many of them are English Language Learners and students with disabilities. My students are thoughtful, energetic and inspired learners who are discovering the world and themselves through literature and writing. They do best when they know people truly care about them and their futures. They also learn best when they are engaged in interesting and meaningful classroom activities and projects. Many teachers in my school have very limited technology in their classrooms. Funds are often limited in large public school systems, but that should not determine the resources my students are able to use. English classes are often overlooked in terms of technology, but it can play such a big role in how students are able to engage, present, and comprehend texts and language.
