In 8th grade, students have usually decided if they are fond of reading or not. My job, as an English teacher is to ensure that I can foster a love of reading in the children who are not easily excited by a new book. The text, "The Tattooist of Auschwitz" will not only capture the interest of the teenagers in my classroom but could spark a passion for literature. The devastation of the Holocaust is a delicate event that should be taught with the utmost conviction. If my project is funded, my students will have the opportunity to read a story about a survivor named Lale Sokolov, who was abducted and transported to a concentration camp where he is given the gruesome job of tattooing his fellow prisoners. This book will allow the 8th graders to explore a different era, and more importantly explore a time period that impacted society as a whole. After students read "The Tattooist of Auschwitz", they will take part in thought provoking activities and projects related to the theme of resilience and survival. Working in an inner-city school, the students that walk through the doors each day are accompanied with many challenges. One of the most prominent issues that the students face is survival. This novel will urge students to create solid connections to their own lives. For children who are all too often faced with an unknown tomorrow, I believe that if they can connect to someone who has overcome such tremendous trauma and struggle, that they too will know it is possible to overcome the hardships they are faced with.
