My students are from an urban area, one of the biggest cities in the nation, in fact! They do not have a lot of money or resources. The school is a high-need school, and it has a reputation of being rough and an at-risk population. The 7th grade class that I teach has not had a full time teacher the entire academic year. I came in late, but I'm working hard to catch them up! I think it is really important to teach kids what they are interested in learning about. This is why I wish to provide them with a rich variety of materials. With a printer in my room, I could make them class sets to read. I hope that they have the opportunity to read poetry and short stories by fantastic writers like Maya Angelou and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I think my students would especially enjoy reading people of color, and connect with something that they are reading in school.
