Students gain leaps and bounds with books that grab their attention. The only downside to this is that books get expensive when it comes to creating a classroom set, let alone trying to provide enough for each student to take home. Students will read these novels in class and we will discuss the different focuses of each while also relating back to their similarities: death and people. My students deal with death more often than most and need a way to work through these issues and understand that feelings are a necessary part of growth as a person. I hope that my students get a chance to reach for the moon and stars, while also receiving gentle reminders that while the world needs dreamers, thinkers and do-ers are also highly important. I want to take them beyond their current mentalities and have them create a sense of direction for their futures. Many of my students think that their futures revolve around what others decide for them or what may eventually happen to them.
