This year I am leading an after school comic book club for my students. I have found that comic books/graphic novels are important resources for all people, but especially helpful for young minds. By having access to acclaimed and published comic books and having the materials to make their own comics, our scholars will learn more about how to be creative through activities in writing, reading, drawing; they will learn how to write and illustrate a story through sequential art. I believe by having this club our scholars will gain confidence in their work and have appreciation for the art of writing and drawing. After all, Art Spiegelman, author of the acclaimed graphic novel Maus said, "Comics are a gateway drug to literacy." Through comics, my students will begin their journey of creative self expression. I plan on using the Bristol paper for inking and drawing with the microns; I want my students to have colorful printing paper so they can their zines will look bright (a zine is a little hand folded single paper comic book). The stapler is for heavy duty stapling. I would love to introduce our scholars to acclaimed comics/graphic novels like March, a comic book about Dr. Martin Luther King Junior and the Civil Rights movement. Exposing our students to these professional comics will serve as inspiration for their growing minds and teach them about significant world events. I plan on housing these books at our library so that any future scholar can have access to them. Any contributions will be so greatly appreciated.
