My students love to read. Every time that I set aside time for my second graders to explore my classroom library, they jump at the chance. As a teacher, I need to include more books with characters who look like my students. I remember when I was a student, I read stories about teachers and I realized my dream to be like the characters in these books. Diverse books will not only help children see themselves in the stories, but will also highlight similarities between their own lives and the characters' lives. I teach in an urban school district where many of my students need to see that anyone can "change their stars" or improve their future. I want my students to see that no matter where you come from, who you are, or the color of your skin, you can make your dreams come true. Through education, anything is possible. Reading these books will help make a difference in my students' lives.
