Have you ever sat in a hard plastic chair for an hour? How about for six hours? How did your body feel? Was the discomfort distracting or taking away from your experience? Did you find yourself moving about or looking for another place to sit or stand? My students know this feeling all too well. High school students know the benefits of flexible seating through personal experience. Here is one student's explanation in support of the project: "Some of the reasons that I believe flexible seating would help us with our health is because we can move a bit in class and most of our class works better when we can fidget. Our occupational health will increase greatly because it can make the class a better place to learn and also that would help us get our grade higher. It could help our emotional and spiritual health by making our Health room less stressful and it could help others that use the class after us, so it will help a lot of kids learn better in Health class." - 10th-grade student Our bodies are designed to move. I try my best to incorporate movement in a variety of ways, such as active learning, during lessons in Health class. When the time comes to sit and read or reflect, everyone would appreciate a comfortable space. Having a variety of active stools and balance cushions will allow students to be more mobile and comfortable while being able to focus on their work. These seating options will support students in more ways than one!
