Our students face many challenges, they have a history of trauma, social emotional needs, and come from a low economic social environment. When faced with a difficult day, they have a difficult time calming themselves, resulting in the inability to sit for long periods of time hindering there learning and peer relations. Children often seek out sensory activities, eg chewing, play doe, and fidget items. They find the experiences calming, eg rocking, flicking, visual patterns, flapping. When they are allowed time to hold an object in their hands this can often enhance learning. They are able to sit for longer, concentrate better, be less disruptive to peers, is calmer and has reduced anxiety levels. Sensory toys can also replace inappropriate behaviours.
