Most of the 70 students on my caseload are on the autism spectrum. Some have delayed language skills while others have limited verbal abilities. Having an iPad in the therapy setting gives them exposure to enhanced visuals which help support language acquisition. For those students that are nonverbal, an iPad can provide access to a communication system based on picture representation as a means to communicate wants and needs. Additionally, many of my students also have a medical diagnosis of ADHD or ADD. Consequently, they struggle with sustained attention and maintaining interest on books. Books and language learning applications on the iPad provide a highly motivating resouce for those that need it to succeed.
