The novels I am requesting can be used over and over again for years, thus the reason I think they will reach 500 students. After reading and discussing A Long Walk to Water, my students will learn about challenges, survival and the life of a refugee. They will delve into the experiences of Sudanese tribes confronting modern war as well as compare historical content to a fiction portrayal. Upon completion of the novel and related activities, my students will look at the world through a new lens. They will have a better appreciation of global issues and hopefully be instilled with a desire to help others. Having a new book to hold in their hands after losing many personal belongings and enduring the mold that followed Florence will bring a subliminal sense of renewal and hope to my students.
