The K-12 Ag Production classes at Lima schools are embarking on a new adventure to raise our own beef for our hot lunch program. Students are actively building a shelter and holding pen to house two weaning steer calves. The students have balanced rations and developed a feeding plan to feed the steers to finish. The students will track the calves weight gain on a monthly basis and use the information to figure average daily gain and the cost per pound of gain for each individual calf. Students will utilize genetic and historic information to estimate performance of the individual calves, and formulate least cost rations to reach feeding goals. A second group of calves will be placed on the same rations in a different environment to give the students more information to incorporate into their projects. The students will participate in the processing of the calves and the measurement of the carcasses. Each age group will actively participate in the feeding and management of the cattle. The resulting beef will be utilized in the Lima schools hot lunch program.
