When students who work in pairs are holding pictures of situations or vocabulary, they are able to spontaneously react to the photo or written situation. Spontaneous conversation is the foundation of language learning. I avoid the use of the iPad in my French classroom at CHS in St. Paul, MN. I could put all the pictures and written conversation situations on a Google document or Google slide show (and avoid the need for lamination film), but then students are still staring at a device instead of their partner. They stare at their devices enough during the rest of the day. Speaking a language involves interacting with a partner. I will use the laminating film to protect and reuse (for many years) the color pictures and conversation starters that I have created or printed. These laminated materials will propel the students to chat with each other and spur on the improvement of their speaking skills.
