My students are craving modern, diverse texts in our classroom. In addition to the classics we study and stock at our school, I want to introduce them to new, relevant literature. Students will want to absorb every word of this book to further engage themselves in literature. Current events and “the ways of the world” are hot topics they cannot get enough of. Our country is suffering a massive divide, and issues of racially inequality need to be acknowledged and explored. What better way to create lifelong readers than through a modern text such as “The Hate U Give!” This eye-opening text will be a catalyst to deep conversations, debate, and analysis. All it takes to inspire a child to read is one good book!
