Our current selection of texts for 10th grade world literature is currently limited mainly to narratives set in America and Europe. My students are curious and interested in the texts that we have read, but are excited to branch out from some of the repetitive themes and cultures that are being explored. They are looking for texts with a very different perspective on the world, which also have themes that are relevant and interesting to them. Siddhartha offers a range of observations on humanity, finding happiness, and discovering oneself, all of which will engage and interest my students. It is also a tightly-written narrative that spans a number of facets of Indian history and culture, including the caste system, the culture of monks and samanas, and the noble eightfold path. We will be unpacking each of these elements as they appear in the story and adding depth with outside sources. I am very excited to give my students the opportunity to grow and question along with the character of Siddhartha himself, both learning from and challenging the various ideas and modes of thought he takes on at various points in the story. I believe that my students will be able to relate to Siddhartha's journey even as they challenge his thinking, and ultimately gain a deep and personal understanding of a story from a very different culture than their own.
