“We need to recognize that children are movement-based,” said Brian Gatens, the superintendent of schools in Emerson, N.J. “In schools, we sometimes are pushing against human nature in asking them to sit still and be quiet all the time.” - "Why Kids Shouldn't Sit Still in Schools" (New York Times.) Kids need safe ways to express their energy while still engaging in classroom learning. Hokki stools have a curved bottom, enabling students to rock back and forth without disturbing other or, in the case of one student last year, in a regular chair, fall over backwards. Students' bodies adjust in order to keep the chair balanced; and therefore, it's a bit of a core workout for them as well. This project attempts to improve concentration and focus for all students, but kids with movement issues, such as those with ADHD or Autism, benefit even more from this type of tool. Their natural instinct to shift and move while working at their seats will be possible on these Hokki stools.
