My 7th and 8th-grade students will be exploring Earth as a planet. What makes it suitable for life? Are there other planets out there we could inhabit? The project will start with students working on creating their own river system with the Carolina River Kit. Students will learn the importance of water and how keeping it clean and drinkable is not always easy. Students will then look beyond Earth to see if other planets might have liquid water. Students will explore the solar system with a focus on a trip to Mars, the closest planet a human manned shuttle can get to with current technology. They will break down the process of getting a human into space and on to a different planet that may or may not have available water. Students will be reading The Martian Class Edition to enrich their experience, work on literacy skills, and help them think like inventors and problem solvers.
