Children learn about and explore their environment through play. Age-appropriate toys and games are essential to develop skills such as motor coordination, social interactions, and problem-solving. Through play, children make sense of the world around them. They strengthen their whole body musculature which results in fine motor development. This leads to functional grasps when holding pencils, crayons, and scissors in order to be more successful in the classroom. Play also provides important sensory information (the 5 senses plus vestibular, proprioceptive, and interoceptive input) that lets the brain process and then choose an appropriate response. A tunnel and scooter board will allow my students to develop upper extremity and core strength by weight-bearing through their arms. Toys like the water beads, playfoam, and kinetic sand provide sensory input as well as allow for strengthening hand muscles. A gymnastics mat and leg rests will provide alternate seating positions in which students can process information best. These toys will engage and motivate my students as they are growing and learning.
