Providing students with shoes that fit, provides students with dignity and joy. Together, we can make a difference to kids in need. We can alleviate this simple burden. We can make sure no child is wearing shoes that are too small, old, smelly or too inappropriate. I love the smile that it puts on my students' faces. It gives my kids an equal opportunity to be able to have good shoes in school and increases their confidence. I am writing because I serve as the school counselor for two schools. My school family and community were greatly affected by Hurricane Florence, which wreck havoc on the community and schools throughout the county . Our enrollment is currently 201 students (46% black, 36% white, 15% Hispanic, and 3% multi-racial). My school is designated, as a Title I school in North Carolina due to that approximately 71.1% of our student population is economically disadvantaged. All students enrolled receive free breakfast and lunch through a federal grant for low-income schools. My school will not be reopened due to the tremendous flood damage. County residents and students have been displaced and still awaiting help from FEMA. Students at my school are dispersed at three different elementary schools in the county. What I have noticed, Is that a lot of student did not have adequate shoes when they returned. I would love to have at least a $25.00 dollar voucher/ gift card to be able to help families to purchase new shoes for the children I serve.
