Students will read novels that integrate science and social studies into the literacy program. They also need some copies of replacement books, The Sign of the Beaver, to replace damaged copies. This novel enhances our studies of Native Americans and the settlement of what would become the United States. These guides contain vocabulary, comprehension questions, writing prompts, literary devices and projects. They combine Montessori cultural areas with reading, which are critical to comprehension and the core of our program. This will give students the opportunity to be immersed in rich authentic literature rather than reading excerpts from traditional basal textbooks.
