Twenty beautiful African American faces stare back at me each day, and I wonder what difference I can make in their lives. I see most of them struggling or hating to read, because I do not have books they can relate to on a personal level. I need authors like Walter Dean Myers to line my bookshelves to increase interest. By providing my students books with African Americans as the star, you are providing them the opportunity to not only increase their reading level, but also to develop a lifelong love for reading! And that, is a powerful gift!

About my class
