Can you imagine being 10 years old, and having rarely played a board game at home with your family? Unfortunately, in this busy day and age, that is the norm for many of my math students. The ability to learn how to take turns, count up and down on a game board, practice patterns, and perform simple math computations as part of a game are skills that some of my students are lacking. Games such as “Prime Climb”, “Spot It”, “Connect Four”, and “Jungle Stack” would be used in learning centers and would allow my students this opportunity to play fun and engaging games. Mind-stretching math games such as “Zeus on the Loose”, “Super Genius”, and “Head Full of Numbers”, would also allow students an engaging and interactive way to experience numbers and to increase their number sense as they practice math facts and mental computations in small groups. Math games and manipulatives (such as “Magnetic Blocks”) are the perfect avenues for increasing computation skills and problem-solving! In addition, many of my reading students are avid readers and need a challenge, but some are reluctant and need engaging texts to push them to new heights. The “Michael Vey” Book Series would be used as a part of my classroom library and be checked out for reading enrichment. Additionally, graphic novels and simpler texts that are funny and exciting grab readers and pull them into a new realm of reading. This is why I would love to get a set of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, as well as the graphic novels such as “A Wrinkle in Time”, which is so popular right now, and deeply engaging to reluctant readers.
