Fifth and sixth grade science students will have an opportunity to witness a self-sustaining ecosystem with the AquaSprouts aquaponics kit! Students will help care for the aquarium fish which will fertilize the garden plants above and in turn, the garden plants will help keep the water clean. We will have goldfish and a mix of living and fake plants in the tank and up above we will grow a mixture of herbs, leafy greens and vegetables! This will be an excellent cold weather alternative to our school garden project. Students will be able to observe and classify organisms as they interact with other species within their ecosystem. We will plan ways in which the fish will have their basic needs met regarding food and shelter, how the flow of energy is transferred from producer to consumer, as well as the symbiotic relationship between all of the living organisms within our classroom mini-ecosystem!
