Students gain research and inference skills when they read nonfiction books. They will also gain a better understanding of the world around them. While all reading is beneficial, reading nonfiction books helps students learn new things. Reading and understanding nonfiction text allows students to build on their existing knowledge about particular subjects. By reading nonfiction books, students learn to look for clues about what they are reading in order to better answer questions on quizzes and tests. It also prepares students to read and apply information given in job related texts as they get older. Nonfiction reading has also been shown to improve standardized test scores.
