Students will be engaging in a hands on engineering project that will have a focus in ecology of abiotic and biotic factors - how they affect one another. Students will be creating a combination of aquarium that is attached to a terrarium with growing plant seeds in a container that they design out of recyclables, milk cartons, any kind of container from home The groups will monitor their water which should provide a good environment for the brine shrimp to live and grow. The students will tweak their aquaponic structures or tweak what they need to add to the water based on their data gathered : pH ( presence of ammonia), and nitrates, nitrites present. If their aquaponics organisms - either terra - the plants or aquatic - the brine shrimp have out of balance environments - the students can learn how to adjust the abiotic factors to increase their survival. Extra credit goes to the group that not only has a majority of brine shrimp survive, but has the most - to feed the class aquarium of fish that feed upon invertebrates!
