In our Fourth Grade English Language Arts Curriculum we read about inventors, detailed histories of important inventions, and scientific explanations of simple machines. We also read about the creative process of creating our own invention. This project will provide STEM kits that the students can work on in small groups or as individuals to explore the creation of simple machines, electricity, and circuitry. The students can actually do the projects that they could only read about in the curriculum. Bringing our reading about inventors and innovations to life will stimulate the curiosity of the students. The more involved in what they are reading, the more they can improve their literacy. By enriching their experiences with the printed word, students will become better readers. These STEM kits will play many roles in our classroom. First and foremost, they will be able to physically explore some of the inventions that they read about. Second, the kits have all the materials needed to create their own inventions as well. Third, students who normally are not engaged with reading a book or doing a worksheet due to lower reading levels are able to learn the concepts hands on. Finally, STEM created critical thinking skills that my students can apply to other subjects like math and science.
