I want to expand our unit on humanity and dehumanization by providing reading choice for small groups. Students will be introduced to these books and will have an opportunity to choose what they read and discuss with their peers under the theme of our unit. Students will do this by working in literature circles. Having access to these books gives students the opportunity to be successful in a challenging reading environment, develop student voice and cooperation, and leadership skills. Choice helps students better engage with what they are learning because there is a level of ownership over what they are being asked to do. On top of this, these books are at a variety of reading levels ranging from middle school level to college level, matching the needs of my students. Students will be reading these books with a small group of their peers and will have short discussions with each other on a daily basis. Small groups make it so more soft-spoken students can have an opportunity to have their voices heard and leadership skills can be fostered in a safe, low-risk environment with the help of these books.
