High school students crave snacks AND connections! We all know teenagers are hungry, and I've kept a drawer of snacks in my classroom for a couple of years. These snacks have always been available to any and all students, with no need to justify or explain why they're seeking to supplement their food for the day. From simple observation, though, I'm seeing students with a variety of food-centered needs; one of the most significant is the deep way that food helps my students make connections to other people. Most of us have experienced the profound ways that food builds community in large and small, happy and sad ways: from festive 4th of July neighborhood barbecues to church-basement breakfasts; from the meal your mom always makes you on your birthday to your golf team's annual brunch. So, while a number of my students experience food insecurity (often compounded by housing insecurities) and many more simply need an extra boost to get them through the final 3-4 hours of their school day between lunch and the bus ride home, this year in particular, students are visiting the snack drawer to make a connection. Every day from the time my classroom opens at 7:45 am to 3:45 pm or even later, current and former students drop by for a minute or two to grab a granola bar, to chat about their lives, or even to ask if it's OK to grab 2 or 3 bars because they want to share with a friend. These moments are the best parts of my day. They're also becoming increasingly expensive moments -- I regularly go through 50 or more granola bars a week -- that I can't continue to subsidize just on my own. Thank you for any help that you can offer!
