My students come from the central valley, which is made up of low income communities. Many of the students have parents who don't have a high school education and work in the fields cultivating crops. Literacy is a big challenge in this area. Many of our students are reading far below their grade level. A great percentage of our students are ELL. Although I am a science teacher, I would like to have books in the classroom that can help engage my students in the content area all while helping to increasing their reading and literacy skills. Incorporating my content area in a way that helps the entire school be successful in literacy will ensure I do my part in helping these students be successful in contents beyond science.
