Starting at a new school this year, I was shocked to find how many 5th graders read 2 or even 3 grade levels below standard. This makes it so hard for them to access all other subject areas! Students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities require reading instruction that is different from most traditional approaches. "Sounds Sensible" and "S.P.I.R.E" are research and evidence based programs that teach spelling patterns in systematic, multi-sensory way. My students enjoy the activities and can mark their personal progress. They have already made great gains after completing SPIRE 1-3 and are now ready for Set 4-5. Most students with reading challenges also struggle with writing - including spelling, letter formation and sizing - which is why special lined papers are so important. In addition, many of my students require flexible seating options such as floor cushions or wobble chairs, and a visual timer to stay on task.
