Last year our school adopted a program called Reader's Workshop for our reading instruction. It allows for students to work in books at their own level, with short mini lessons and a teaching point, but I felt that something was missing from the quality of instruction. Children need to listen to quality read-alouds and practice responding to those texts. I decided to purchase a supplemental program called Rooted in Reading. This has shown to be a popular program among elementary teachers and schools across the country. With this program we need a new mentor text every week throughout the year. Each mentor text is used throughout the week where we focus on different elements of reading, such as comprehension, grammar and vocabulary. By purchasing these mentor texts, I will be able to use the program with fidelity to teach my students the skills they need to be successful and strong readers.
