Young children need hands-on experience when learning about the world they live in! By buddying up with eighth graders, they can experiment and interact with actual elements of the world around them. Dissecting owl pellets and looking at rocks under magnifying glasses help them to realize that there are hidden elements of the everyday that are exciting to discover. The older students become the mentors and teachers as they guide the younger students. They have to study first and then pass on what they learn. Co-operative learning not only imparts science facts but elements of teamwork which is a crucial skill.
