These books will allow my students to place some of the topics we are learning about in class into real life situations. It is far easier to understand the impacts of historical events when they are given from an individual's standpoint instead of looking at how they impact a society as a whole. Doing so, will allow students to experience these events and developments through empathy. For example, reading "The Jungle" is something that some of my students have already expressed interest in, due to the facts of industrial life we have discussed. Exposing them to a day to day account of what these conditions would have been like will allow them to further relate to and internalize the concepts.
