With only a few of my students able to express themselves verbally let alone in writing, I want to do all I can to provide them with materials they can use to learn about the world around them. Sturdy specimens allow students to make observations they otherwise would not be able to. With the challenges we face with trying to take these classes outside where they can be safe, these specimens proivde students a more concrete learning experience than looking at pictures or a video alone. Long lasting materials such as the wooden ball and ramp set allow my students to exlpore and learn more independently. My students will be able to work together to design and build as they explore forces and motion. With little risk of damage to materials, students are able to work more self-sufficiently as they make sense of their observations. Durable tools like unbreakable test tubes and larger hand lenses provide methods for students with reduced dexterity to participate in activities more directly. Most of the hand lenses that students have access too are too small for them to use alone and trying to use a 4 inch hand lens with help is not really any easier. Glass test tubes also pose a risk so students are left simply observing someone else doing the science. These larger hand lenses and the unbreakable test tubes will allow my students to use scientific tools independently, just like their mainstream peers.
