These students live in one of the poorest regions in the nation, the Mississippi Delta. The area, though rich with cultural and historical importance, suffers from a long history of racial inequality and severe poverty. My students' lives tell the same story, yet each day they come to school with energy, excitement and a curiosity to learn new things. Many face struggles at home, lacking clean clothing, proper nutrition and adequate shelter. The school I teach at is located in a very rural area. Most of my students have never been out of the county and unfortunately have very little understanding or vision about the world around them. With little opportunity for cultural activities and events, my students have few chances to expand their horizons. For many of them, all they know is the school they learn at, their families and their classmates from scattered little towns across the county. So many are eager to learn about new places and the exciting possibilities of the future.
