Mathematics is one of our favorite parts of the day! Using our white boards is a crucial part of our math block. We start our math block by practicing some of the math we have previously learned, we move on to an introduction to the new concept; this is all done on our white boards. Once students have worked out the math on their white board, they get up and find a partner to talk to about their work. This discourse about math is such an important part of learning. Not only are students able to talk about their strategies, but they are able to hear about other strategies. Right now, our white boards are clear plastic sleeves with printer paper inside or some students use their binder. The plastic sleeves are easily lost or need to be replaced for the next school year. By donating to our project, you will transform the way we learn and interact with mathematics. I have slowly been gathering math manipulatives for my classroom and I see firsthand the power that they have for grasping concepts. As a hands on learner myself, I know the importance of a variety of manipulatives to help gain a stronger understanding of skills, concepts, and strategies. Not only are hands on manipulatives important for growing mathematicians, books about real-life mathematics are also important. I have found that when I connect mathematical concepts to real-life my students gain a deeper understanding. Finally, all of our amazing math manipulatives need a place to stay. I want my students to have access to any and all manipulatives. By storing them all in one area, my students will know exactly where to go, and will be able to keep them nice and neat.
