Middle school students spend most of their day cooped up inside, forced to stay seated and totally silent, and (if they're like me in middle school) looking out the window wishing they could be "out there." Allowing students to move freely and be outside has positive benefits on the rest of their educational experience, by increasing focus and concentration throughout the rest of their school day, far above and beyond the valuable lessons that can be learned in the outside world. And while it is just the Environmental Science students that are using the space currently, by providing simple supplies that all teachers and students will be able to use, I hope that the entire population of learners and teachers at our middle school will be able to appreciate the space. From English to math, from history to science, all areas of the curriculum will benefit from the creation of this outdoor classroom space.
