The carpet is a grounding piece for so many of the activities that take place in the science lab. Small group instruction, lesson introduction, and a place for flexible seating when needed. Students are familiar with the phrase "Come on in and have a seat on the carpet". Our current carpet has been used by 500+ students a week for the last 6 years, and is showing wear and falling apart. The carpet is the place where kindergarten and first grade start the class, are introduced to the lesson, and learn about what we will be doing. Second, third and fourth grade use the carpet for small group instruction, flexible seating, and measurement activities. Students find the carpet comforting when they need a break, or alternative seating. The carpet in the Science Lab is a place to gather, share, learn, and start their roles as learners in the scientific community!
