My students love to read and write but it is hard for them to stay focused and complete the assignments. Research has proven that using flexible seating options improves engagement and retention, especially in students with cognitive processing disorders (Autism, ADHD, etc.). It gives the child independence, freedom and ownership in their classroom. My students also engage in a lot of hands-on, collaborative work. These seating options make it easier for my wonderful 7th and 8th graders to complete those group activities. As stated previously, my goal for my classroom is to create a warm, friendly, safe and inviting atmosphere where students feel comfortable to take risks and make mistakes. This atmosphere and collaboration among students can be accomplished by giving students flexible seating options.
