We are a fourth grade class in a public school in California. We represent a blend of ethnic, socio-economic and academic backgrounds and abilities. We are hardworking and willing to take a risk to learn new things, even if it is outside of our comfort zone. During the past month, we have been reading Creech's novel, Love That Dog, and have discovered the rich poetry of William Carlos Williams, Robert Frost, William Blake and Walter Dean Myers. As a result of reading the novel, students have been motivated to independently seek out poetry at the library. They are responding to the literature by writing, reading aloud, and publishing their own works. They have established a poetry corner in the classroom where they can post their writings. Students have learned that there is a follow-up novel to the book called, Hate That Cat" which continues the protagonist's journey and have asked to read it as a class.
