I have recently inherited the wood shop and I'm currently transforming it into our district's first STEM-LAB. There is a lot riding on the success of taking an industrial arts room, maintaining the essence of what it stood for, and bringing it into the 21st century as a STEM LAB. Dressing the part you want to play gives way to the proper mindset for success. I wanted the kids to understand that we do STEM here, not woodshop. Normally I'm the only one wearing a lab coat during lab. One day it was chilly and I gave my lab coat to a student. It was like she, herself, was transformed. "I feel like a real scientist!" she exclaimed. She was more focused than I'd ever see her. That helped me realize that all my students can "feel like real scientists". Wearing a simple lab coat transformed this student's mindset because she felt the part she was playing. Like an actor getting into character, sometimes a simple a lab coat can help a student get into STEM.
