A big challenge in fifth grade is fractions. A lot of students and even parents struggle with the abstract concept of parts to a whole. Ideas exist in students minds and manipulatives help them to connect mathematical vocabulary with and symbols. Manipulatives take the abstract concepts of math and makes them concrete for students. I am hopeful by adding these fraction kits to my instruction I will be able to build confidence in my students and their ability to test and confirm their reasoning. Students will then not only be able to see the fractions and how they relate to the mathematical ideas we have been discussing but then they will be able to strengthen their problem solving skills as well as their 21st century skills.
