Due to the current events in our nation, I have considered my role as a white teacher in America. Because I am white, I do not have the ability to provide viewpoints from my own experience and would like to rely more heavily on the viewpoints of Authors of Color. What I do and say in the classroom has a direct impact on a student's world view. The literature and media provided in our classroom library is an extension of my words. Currently, the books that fill my classroom feature mostly white characters. With the recent events happening in our nation, it has become abundantly clear that showing the diversity within our country, and the world, to students, is incredibly important. Therefore, I am requesting books that paint a picture of our America, highlight the accomplishments, strengths, and experiences of People of All Colors. I want all of my students to know and feel that they are accepted while still celebrating and accepting others. The books I am requesting for my students will help paint a more accurate picture of ethnic diversity. With these books, my students can dive into worlds that are different from their own, and in some cases, very much the same. Giving my students access to inclusive literature will help foster love and acceptance of all people. Representation in the classroom matters! Please consider donating!
