The goal is to guide students though laboratory-based scientific procedures. This project will teach students the process of culturing bacteria, transforming a plasmid with a gene for a fluorescent proteins. This will give students an understanding of various applications and a this procedure, such as, amplification of a gene, for gene expression like with insulin, or for making recombinant DNA for various types of therapies. Cutting edge science and technology has and will have a profound impact on all our lives. An understanding of the impact it has now and will have in the future is important in preparing our student to be “technological citizens”. Hands-on, step-by-step laboratory comprehension of real-life applications will facilitate scientific literacy.
