Most of my students have mild specific learning differences which can mean slower visual or auditory processing, attention deficits, and other disorders that may affect the way they take in certain information. They require accommodations of all kinds in order to access the core curriculum. These kids are working even harder than most in order to understand and remember what they learn in class and they have to find tools to make up for whatever deficits they have going on so they can concentrate and get the job done. In addition, most have low motivation and confidence in their academics, especially math. They deserve to learn in comfort. As a newer teacher, I have decided I want to take a non-traditional approach to developing my classroom decor/setup. These teenagers are tired of the same old classroom environment and feel boxed in and bored. My students benefit academically and feel empowered when they can make their own choices on how they will get their learning on. The job will take time, but I am starting with seating. The goal is to accumulate a variety of seating, starting with the requested soft stools, and active stools.
