Our students come to the library weekly for instruction and checkout time. The younger grades especially start out on the carpet for a story, or to receive instruction and modeling for an assignment or project. Our current story carpet is small, stained and raveling at the edges. It has pictures of eight animals that the students fight over. A library carpet serves multiple purposes: as a place to hear a story, get instruction, and to stretch out and read. Our school also uses community circles as a way to solve problems as a whole class. When we held community circles in the library to discuss how to solve personal space issues when we're sitting on the floor, having a larger carpet was put forth many times as a solution. If the space was larger, and the pattern more equitable, it would eliminate many of the squabbles about where to sit that often delay our learning.
