Our school is in a low-income part of the city, where nearly all of our students and their families live below the federal poverty level. Data shows that our district has a significant problem with chronic absenteeism. Some families' inability to provide clean clothing plays a part in our students' poor attendance. Learning about building wealth, saving, and retirement are just a few of life's important decisions that will have to be made. If we start early, instilling these values, the children will have a better understanding of financial literacy and learn the importance of staying away from debt. If we can help students by giving their parents convenient, free access to a working washer, we can boost attendance, reduce stigma, and build self-confidence in all of our students. Also, as a school with many Pre-K and Kindergarten classes, we have our fair share of accidents that we would like to assist the parents in taking care of so they don't have to worry about going to the laundry mat or finding a clean set of clothes. We also need laundry detergent and fabric softener for the requested washer.
