Rudine Sims Bishop once said, “Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined...however, a window can also be a mirror...reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books." This is the space I need my classroom library to fill. I need books that offer both windows and mirrors for my students to be able to see themselves as part of the bigger picture and then place themselves where they want to be within that picture. These books have been hand selected to change lives. I know, with the right environment, with books that are accessible both by their vocabulary and their story, my students can transform their destinies into obtainable futures. Literacy truly levels the playing field and I want my students to have the best chance of success as possible.
