Getting out into nature is a key element for biologists. That is why I want to move my classroom from collecting data in an ordinary lab setting to collecting data in the field. I know that my students will finally see the value to collecting data when they enter their data collected into a website that ornithologists use to start their research. This should help answer the question that every middle school teacher gets, "why are we doing this?" These binoculars will give my students the necessary image quality to help identify some of those more difficult smaller birds (sparrows, finches, wrens). A nice detail to this purchase is that it comes with a cell phone attachment. This will give my students the means to take photos of birds that they can identify later by utilizing field guides or the app Merlin. Once the correct birds are identified, my students can upload their data into eBird. My goal is to bird throughout the school year by incorporating various aspects of the 7th grade standards into the project. The capstone of this project will be a mini investigation that my students conduct on a field bird topic of their choosing.
