Inside Out and Back Again is the first book 8th grade general education students read according to the common core curriculum. I am trying to give my 8th grade special needs students as much access to the general education curriculum as possible so that they are caught up to their 8th grade peers. It is important that these special needs students have access to the same curriculum so that they are not at a disadvantage when moving on to high school or college. This book also helps students gain perspective on a different culture than their own. It is important for them to be exposed to different cultures in literature to help them become tolerant of cultures different from their own in the real world.
