My project is called "Bach to the Basics: Increasing Music Literacy in Choir." I am in need of a rolling white board that is pre-lined with a music staff to help teach basic music theory to my students in both choir and piano. Currently, my classroom has a blackboard and an interactive whiteboard. Neither of these items are able to clearly notate sight singing exercises, rhythm reading exercises, chord structure, or provide a more interactive approach to learning. My goal is to be able to have students use the whiteboard to compose their own warm ups, melodies, and harmonies for our music theory lessons. It is also where I am able to give examples that directly apply to our repertoire. As music teachers, we owe it to our students to provide them with the skills necessary to participate in music long after they leave high school. I want to ensure that my students are able to read music independently, and this rolling music staff whiteboard is exactly what I need to further engage my students in this life-long skill. This tool will be one of my most valued resources in the music classroom. Being able to come up to the whiteboard and physically write the musical notation is invaluable to a hands-on learning approach. My students will be able to take more of a leadership role in this music literacy process with this addition to our learning environment. The flexibility of the whiteboard's proximity to students is an additional bonus for students who are visually impaired. In addition, this tool will give me the opportunity to expand on those "teachable moments." It will give me the ability to immediately draw or notate a phrase that I want my students to examine, or map out a more abstract concept. Thank you!
